Yes, New York will likely have an April 2 Presidential Primary

But that is only one of the question marks surrounding the Empire State for 2024

Politico’s Bill Mahoney had an interesting story up on Wednesday detailing plans for New York to not only hold a presidential primary on April 2 next year, but serve as the anchor in a regional primary on the same date.

The only thing is, none of that was exactly news. The idea of a subregional primary consisting of Connecticut and New York dates back to late March when Connecticut Democratic Party Chair Nancy DiNardo mentioned that moving the presidential primary in the Nutmeg state to April 2 would align the contest with the primary in New York. That was further buttressed with the April release of the draft Democratic delegate selection plan in Rhode Island that specifically stated that the primary in the Ocean state would occur on April 2 alongside Connecticut and New York. Subsequent draft delegate selection plans from Democrats in New York and then Connecticut later in April seemed to formalize what was coming on the legislative front in each. It has only been in recent days that Pennsylvania has been added to the mix.¹

So yes, all four are eyeing April 2 and Connecticut and Rhode Island have already moved legislation to do their part in creating a subregional cluster of neighboring contests that would make them eligible for a clustering bonus of 15 percent added to their base delegation for 2024. Each of the four states and Delaware received the same bonus in 2012 and various combinations of them have gotten the same bump in the last two cycles.
