President Biden has left the race for the White House. News of the decision broke Sunday afternoon and while the move itself is not exactly unprecedented, the timing is. And it is because of that timing that the rules of the nomination process are back, front and center, with just four weeks to go until Democrats gather in Chicago for their quadrennial national convention.

Initially, I had planned to write today about the logistics of the so-called “blitz primary.” But events have transpired and largely made that discussion moot.1

Instead, in the wake of the president’s decision, here’s a look at how the party rules intersect with this moment in the race for the 2024 Democratic presidential nomination.
